Although you don’t have to buy new outfits for your photo shoot, sometimes it’s fun to refresh your look or you might not already have outfits that look good together! I’ve got you covered!
Let's Dive In............
Choosing the photoshoot location first is crucial for coordinating outfits, as it determines the colors and style that will best complement the background. You should select a location and then coordinate outfits by choosing colors that will stand out or blend harmoniously, ensuring the background doesn't overpower the subject.
How to choose your location to coordinate outfits
- Consider complementary and contrasting colors: Think about the prominent colors in your chosen location and decide whether you want outfits to contrast with or complement them.
- Contrast: Wear a white outfit if shooting in front of a snowy background to avoid blending in.
- Blend: Choose earthy tones like greens and browns for a forest setting.
- Match your outfit style to the location: The setting should influence the overall vibe of your outfits.
- Urban: Bold colors or structured outfits can create a modern feel.
- Beach: Soft pastels or light neutrals will complement the sand and sea.
- Fall: Cozy sweaters and warm layers work well in autumn settings.
- Balance simple and busy backgrounds: If you have a very colorful outfit, a simple, plain background can prevent the photo from being too busy. If your outfit is more subdued, a vibrant or textured backdrop can add excitement.
Choose a color palette
Now that you have one outfit picked out, it's time to figure out what everyone else is wearing. Choose 2 to 3 coordinating colors having the majority of them be neutral colors with one color that stands out and brings the family together. With clothing. Think muted colors and avoid over saturated and bold colors. I have a Pinterest page with some ideas to help with clothing color palettes and coordination.
Coordinate, don't match
It's important to look like you all belong together, but when outfits get too matchy-matchy, it becomes distracting and the photo. Avoid wearing the same color top as your spouse or putting your children in the exact same outfits. You can look at my Pinterest Page for inspiration.
Dress for the weather
If outside, layers are best. Evenings can get chilly, even in the spring and early summer months. A light sweater or vest can still be added and still coordinate with the family's style. Chilly clients tense up and the photo just doesn't come out how everyone had hoped. It's best to plan ahead with extra layers just in case.
Coordinate with your interior style
Think ahead. If you would like to put these photos somewhere in your home, plan it out first. Choose clothing that goes with the sofa in the living room, or the rug in the study or office. Family portraits make wonderful additions to the interior design of your home.
Choose classic over trendy
Trendy clothes are great... now. But think about the clothes that were trendy 15 years ago. Would you still want to see portraits of yourself with layered tank tops and a track jackets? Probably not. Classic is, well, classic.
Only one outfit
Don't overthink it
Adding wardrobe changes to a photo session not only takes up time, but it also makes kids grumpy. Kids don't always love getting their photo taken, but they especially don't like getting their photo taken, having to get dressed, and then getting their photo taken some more. We're trying to take pictures of happy kids.
Just be yourself
Avoid dressing like your friend's neighbor that you saw on Pinterest. Or a celebrity's family photos that you came across in a magazine. If you do that, the photos will come out looking fake and uncomfortable, regardless of how hard you try. Wear something that says "this is me, and this is our family." That's what I want to give you a picture of.
Best Colors for Fall Family Photos
Choosing the right colors can set the tone for your family photos and help you blend beautifully with the fall landscape. Here are some colors that work exceptionally well for fall photo outfits:
- Earthy Tones: Shades of brown, beige, and olive can create a warm and inviting look that matches the earthy tones of the season.
- Deep Reds and Burgundies: These rich hues evoke a sense of coziness and elegance, perfect for a fall photoshoot.
- Mustard and Burnt Orange: These colors can add a pop of vibrancy to your photos, capturing the essence of the changing leaves.
- Navy and Dark Greens: These versatile colors provide a classic and timeless feel, fitting for any fall setting.

Hair, Makeup & Manicures
If it’s within your budget, I highly recommend having your hair and/or makeup done professionally before your session. A polished look elevates your portraits and enhances your confidence during the shoot.
For men, a fresh haircut a day or two before the session and light grooming the morning of will ensure a clean, camera-ready look.
Remember, you’re already investing in your portrait experience — make it the best it can be!
Your hands will naturally appear in many photos — especially in the more candid or connected poses.
Make sure your nails are clean and trimmed, with no chipped polish.
Best options: French manicures, natural tones, or bare nails.
In summary………
Just bring your wonderful personality and let’s capture your magical moment!
My goal is to create more than just “pictures.” I want your portrait session to feel like a truly memorable experience — one that reflects your story and feels effortless from start to finish.
